I am pleased to share that Ron DeSantis has officially issued a Proclamation recognizing March as Brain Injury Awareness Month in the state of Florida.

This proclamation brings important attention to the significant number of Florida residents, including many veterans, who are living with brain injuries. It highlights the complex challenges they often face in key areas of life, including employment, education, housing, and full community integration.

Equally important, the proclamation underscores the need to reduce the stigma associated with brain injury. Through increased education and public awareness, we can foster greater understanding, improve access to support, and help ensure that individuals affected by brain injury are empowered to live full and meaningful lives.

We are grateful for this recognition and the opportunity it provides to elevate awareness across our communities. Together, we can continue working toward a more inclusive and supportive environment for all Floridians impacted by brain injury.

Thank you for your continued support.

Rachel Ramirez, Director of Health and Disability Programs, Ohio Domestic Violence Network

It’s football season, and there is no doubt concussions will become a topic of discussion again. The 2022 National Football League (NFL) season brought changes to the NFL Concussion Protocol after several very public and very disturbing concussions witnessed by millions. While coalitions such as Concussion Awareness Now (the CAN Coalition, led by the Brain Injury Association of America) are working to educate the public on the multiple causes of concussion, to most average people, concussion is very much associated with sports. Yet there is another invisible group left out of this discussion—domestic violence victims, who suffer violent attacks to the head, neck, and face at alarming rates. These concussions and brain injuries go unrecognized and untreated, exacting devastating consequences on a person’s health and impacting their daily life.

As a domestic violence professional with almost two decades worth of experience, it wasn’t until seven years ago that it crossed my mind that domestic violence could cause brain injuries. We received a grant to address this issue and did research with The Ohio State University that discovered over 8 in 10 domestic violence survivors accessing services in Ohio experienced blows to the head, neck, and face, and strangulation—a particularly terrifying and brutal cause of brain injuries among domestic violence victims. Their partners hurt them repeatedly, almost none of them received medical care, and most victims were largely unaware of the physical, behavioral, emotional, and cognitive impact brain injury was having on their lives. And it wasn’t just survivors of violence. Professionals and systems working with domestic violence victims had not considered how brain injury affects survivors seeking help, and how they needed to provide services differently.

We set out to change that reality in Ohio. We developed a brain injury-aware, trauma-informed approach called CARE (Connect, Acknowledge, Respond, Evaluate) with guidance for service providers on addressing brain injury caused by domestic violence. In 2019, we created the Center on Partner-Inflicted Brain Injury to provide national leadership on this issue through training, technical assistance, consultation, resources, and support for organizations and systems to better address this issue. Since then, we have provided support to groups in more than 30 states and three countries, and trained more than 20,000 people.

Domestic violence survivors need the services and support of brain injury professionals like you to help them heal and recover from their abusive experiences. And chances are very high that you are working with victims of abuse, even if you are unaware. Providing education and information about domestic violence to all your patients can help survivors gain access to lifesaving resources. You can ask direct questions about head injuries using guidance from the CARE Tool CHATS. Normalizing conversations about relationships and their challenges can help domestic violence survivors trust and share with you. To prepare yourself for these conversations, you must learn about the dynamics of domestic violence and coercive control and the psychological trauma domestic violence causes. You must recognize the significant safety concerns related to abuse, as well as the many difficult barriers to care that deserve consideration, including concerns related to the social determinants of health like systemic oppression, housing stability, employment, childcare, and access to medical care.

Your community has a local domestic violence program that can help you support survivors of abuse. Reaching out to them, learning about their services, and discovering opportunities for partnerships and collaborations is key. The brain injury system can’t do this alone. Neither can domestic violence. It takes all of us.

Together, the BRAIN Center and the DJ Lagway Foundation launched “Making Headway with DJ Lagway,” a co‑branded initiative to empower underserved youth by expanding their knowledge of and protection for the brain. The project also addresses two child‑focused priorities in the Florida Brain Injury Action Plan: creating education and awareness for youth, parents and coaches about brain injury risks and recovery, and developing school reentry supports to help children transition after injury.

Lagway‑branded educational supplies will offer bilingual, culturally sensitive guides for parents to recognize concussion symptoms, develop sleep strategies and make informed nutrition choices that support recovery. The BRAIN Center will partner with youth sports leagues and community organizations across Florida to broaden the program’s reach and impact.

“We’re so grateful to DJ and his team for this incredible gift,” Jaffee said. “It will help us continue providing the highest level of care and advancing programs that make a real difference in our community.”

Parent‑ and coach‑advocacy tools will help parents ask the right questions at the right time. Sleep hygiene promotion will involve pairing BRAIN Center-branded rack cards with scientifically proven sleep tips tailored for young athletes. These tips emphasize the role of proper rest in faster recovery, enhancing focus and improving overall game day performance.

Lagway’s representation agency, NETWORK, also played a key role in launching the foundation’s kickoff dinner and bringing his vision to life.

“Working with DJ over the years, I’ve seen his genuine desire to help others,” said Justin J. Giangrande, CEO of NETWORK and Gator alumnus. “Charity is deeply rooted in the Lagway family history. It’s meaningful to support him in giving back to a place that is actively shaping his journey – a place that has played a big role in my life. We’re honored to help DJ invest in something that aligns with his values while pushing forward important conversations about brain health and youth development.”

The BRAIN Center will work with the North Central Florida chapter of the Society for Neuroscience to expand outreach during March Brain Awareness Week, emphasizing the performance, protection and recovery of youth brains. It will also partner with Brain Injury Florida, the state affiliate of the Brain Injury Association of America, to distribute brain injury awareness materials statewide to K‑12 students.

US Navy Veteran and TBI Survivor Ritaann Schultz—National Chairman for Traumatic Brain Injury

My fellow Veterans, it’s my honor to announce that US Navy Veteran and TBI survivor Ritaann Schultz has agreed to serve as National Chairman for Traumatic Brain Injury.

Ritaann (pronounced Rita Ann) Schultz, a proud Pittsburgh, PA native, served our nation with distinction in the United States Navy from 1974 to 1978 as an Aviation Boatswain’s Mate Second Class (ABH2). After completing boot camp, she attended Aviation Boatswain’s Mate School and was stationed with Patrol Squadron 30 at NAS Pax River, Maryland, and NAS Jacksonville, Florida, where she worked with the P-3 aircraft, a critical asset in the Navy’s submarine-hunting missions.

As an Aviation Boatswain’s Mate Handler, Ritaann’s responsibilities on the flight line were both demanding and vital, including aircraft launching and recovery, equipment movement, firefighting, emergency operations, and securing aircraft. In 1975, she broke barriers as the first Navy enlisted woman to become NATOPS qualified as a P-3 Utility Aircrewman, earning her Navy Aircrew Wings. In this role, she handled pre- and post-flight procedures, in-flight observation, emergency duties, and aircraft refueling, once again setting a historic precedent as the first woman in this position.

Beyond her remarkable military service, Ritaann is a retired Licensed Massage Therapist and a long-time resident of Havana, Florida. She finds joy in cycling, gardening, and embracing the outdoors, reflecting her resilient and vibrant spirit. An avid cyclist, Ritaann has logged over 125,000 miles on her bike and competed in four Ironman competitions, even winning her age group as part of a four-person team in the 3,000-mile 2012 Race Across America. However, on February 3, 2015, while riding in a group, she was thrown off her bike at 30 mph and, despite wearing a helmet, suffered a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). It took five years for her injury to be properly diagnosed, during which she faced neuro-fatigue, vision, and cognitive challenges. Through her own research and persistence, Ritaann helped doctors recognize her condition and now advocates for functional therapy approaches that help brain injury survivors regain mobility, strength, and independence.

Please join me in welcoming Ritaann Schultz to Commanders Coalition, where her leadership, experience, and dedication will undoubtedly make a profound impact as our National Chairman for Traumatic Brain Injury.
